This all seemed so strange, so sudden.
Although Millie wasn’t upset that Lucas had admitted he had a child, she was curious why he waited until now, until they’d been together. Wasn’t that something you tell someone before you get serious with them?
Maybe he doesn’t see this as getting serious?
This was serious, not in a bad way, but in the way that she knew this needed to be discussed. This...whatever this was, didn’t just concern them anymore. It involved him having a family.
Millie grabbed the blanket and wrapped it around herself. She sat up on the bed and looked at him. He found his underwear and put them on, and she couldn’t help but appreciate the view of all that lean, hard muscle on display.
When he sat back on the bed, his expression was serious, his focus trained right on her. She licked her lips and looked down at her hands, which were tightly clasped in her lap. “So, you have a child?” She looked back at him and saw him nod.
“I do. That’s not an issue, is it?”
She shook her head. “No, not an issue. I’m just curious why you waited until now to tell me.”
He didn’t speak for long seconds, but she could tell that he was thinking over how to respond.
“I didn’t tell you because I’m very protective of that part of my life, and I didn’t know how things would go with … how this would all play out. Does that make sense?”
She nodded, and although she understood where he was coming from, wanting to keep that part of his life private, to protect it, a part of her wished he could’ve trusted her from the beginning.
Then the logical part of her said he hadn’t known her on more than a professional level. Although this coupling had been fast and intense, consuming, she respected his decision to wait to open up to her.
But he had now, and that was all that mattered.
She wanted to ask more about his child, but it seemed awfully intrusive given the fact that they’d just had sex. Instead, she started dressing, feeling a little bit strange all of a sudden.
“Hey,” he said softly, and she looked at him over her shoulder. “Are you okay?”
She slipped her shirt on and smiled, turning to face him. “I am,” she said honestly.
He patted the bed and she sat down. He reached out and took her hand in his, smoothing his thumb along her wrist. Electricity shot up her arm at that small contact.
Millie didn’t know what it was about Lucas, but he inflamed her, woke up her senses. She’d never felt this way about another person. But, did all of this complicate things now? They’d had sex. She’d slept with her boss. Then he’d divulged a piece of personal information.
A piece that he hadn’t told her initially because, maybe, he thought this would just be a one-night stand.
That thought had her chest aching.
Millie wanted more with Lucas. She’d wanted him since she started working at the restaurant.
